A 1km walk or bike ride east of the main settlement, Kingstown Barracks offers budget beds and a direct line into the island’s storied military history.
Built to house the many troops who were strategically stationed on Rottnest during WWII, this complex of dormitories now hosts school groups and island visitors – a great place to meet fellow travellers away from the busy village fray.
Architecture is part of the appeal here: spartan brown-brick structures with hints of art-deco style, revolving around a broad parade ground. Nearby are the endearing Governors Circle cottages, also former military housing and medical buildings, now sleeping up to 18 guests.
