The #1 kiteboarding event in the southern hemisphere crosses 19km of Indian Ocean every December, racing from Bathurst Lighthouse on Rottnest Island to Leighton Beach in North Fremantle, back on the WA mainland. It’s a super-popular event for international and Australian kiteboarders alike: with just 135 race positions available drawn by ballot, you’ll need a bit of luck if you’re keen on tackling this iconic event.
If you’re one of the chosen few, harness the Fremantle Doctor and race across the open ocean to Freo. The race record is a tick over 19 minutes – faster than a Rottnest Express ferry! Spectators line the sands at Leighton Beach to watch the colourful canopies approaching on the horizon. Look forward to race commentary, live music, good food and drink and trophy presentations, including the crowd-pleasing Marc Sprod Trophy for the fastest West Australian racer. It’s a great day of family fun on the sand.
